BBL News – Matthew Mott has joined the Sydney Sixers as assistant coach after leaving England
Matthew Mott has joined the BBL’s Sydney Sixers on a three-year deal as assistant coach following his departure as head coach of the England men’s white-ball team. Mott, who spent eight years in charge of Australia Women before moving to England, will link up with Greg Shipperd at the Sixers as a replacement for Cameron White, who was appointed head coach of the Melbourne Renegades earlier this year. “I’m delighted to be joining the Sydney Sixers,” Mott said. “I started my coaching journey in Sydney many years ago and it’s a place that evokes great memories and a comforting sense of familiarity that I look forward to. The idea of being an assistant to Greg Shipperd, who I have an enormous amount of respect for, really appealed to me.” Mott’s spell as England’s white-ball coach began clearly when they won the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 to combine the world’s two white-ball trophies, but ended after their semi-final exit in the tournament earlier this year, which followed a poor performance in the 2023 edition of the ODIs. Mott began his coaching career with the New South Wales men’s team in 2007. He will reunite with Rachael Haynes, who was one of the key members of the Australian side he coached. “We couldn’t be more pleased to have Motty on board for the next three years,” said Haynes, the Sixers’ general manager opportunity to bring a coach of Motty’s caliber into your ranks, it’s a no-brainer. We know what a fantastic asset he will be to our playing group.” It goes without saying that his coaching resume speaks for itself. He has incredible success around the world and has proven that he knows what it takes to build and maintain a winning culture.” Our club is in safe hands under the leadership of Greg Shipperd and Charlotte Edwards in our women’s program and we are delighted to add Motta’s experience to this group and take us forward. “In last weekend’s BBL draft, the Sixers retained James Vince when the Renegades tried to sign him and later surprised by selecting Yorkshire paceman Jafer Chohan as their final pick. They secured West Indies left-armer Akeal Hosein ahead of the draft.”
