As the war enters its 923rd day, these are the key developments. Here is the status as of Thursday, September 5, 2024. At least seven people, including three children, were killed in a Russian missile and drone attack on a western city in Ukraine. Lviv on the border with Poland. Poland flew fighter jets to ensure its safety as Lviv came under attack. Ukraine’s air force said it shot down 7 of 13 missiles and 22 of 29 drones that Russia deployed in attacks on energy facilities and critical infrastructure in nine Ukrainian regions. At least one person was killed and three wounded when Russian forces shelled a residential area in the eastern Ukrainian town of Kostiantynivka, which lies northeast of Pokrovsk, a strategically important city. Russia’s Defense Ministry admitted it attacked a military educational institution and hospital in Poltava. Ukraine said at least 51 people were killed and 271 wounded in Tuesday’s attack. Russia claimed it was targeting soldiers, foreign instructors and drone operators. Politics and Diplomacy President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said he had ordered a major reshuffle of the government because Ukraine needed “new energy”. A total of six ministers submitted their resignations, and Parliament accepted four of them. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba was among those who offered his resignation, but parliament did not formally approve it. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated Germany’s political and military support for Ukraine. “Germany’s support for Ukraine will not stop. We have arranged, killed [defence] Done deals and secured funding in good time so that Ukraine can continue to rely on us fully in the future,” said Scholz. The Swiss government said it would offer protection to Ukrainian refugees at least until 2026 as the situation there was not expected to change in the foreseeable future. The Kremlin said Russia was adapting its nuclear doctrine because the United States was “inflaming tensions” and its allies were provoking a “hot war in Ukraine” and ignoring Moscow’s legitimate security interests. Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Belarus’ state-run All-National TV Network said a suspected Japanese spy had been detained. The channel said the alleged agent was caught filming military infrastructure and tried to provide information about Chinese investment in Belarus, as well as the situation on the border between Belarus and Ukraine. There has been no official statement from Minsk on the arrest.
